Threads of Belonging
Artprize 2025
Threads of Belonging is a layered, mixed-media painting that explores connection, identity, and emotion. Beneath its vibrant surface, hidden symbols and fragments invite viewers to look closer — to search, discover, and interpret their own meanings.
Each detail reveals part of a larger story, much like the invisible threads that tie people and experiences together. The work invites quiet interaction, encouraging viewers to slow down and engage not only with the colors and forms, but also with the feelings they evoke.
Through this balance of mystery and connection, Threads of Belonging becomes both a personal reflection and a collective experience — a celebration of belonging in all its visible and invisible forms.
Threads of Belonging Interaction
Artprize 2025
This artwork was created as part of an interactive installation during ArtPrize 2025. Visitors were invited to select colorful threads and trace their emotional journeys across the panel, connecting with the words and feelings that resonated with them.
Each thread represents a unique emotion — moments of joy, gratitude, hope, belonging, and love — woven together into a collective tapestry of shared humanity.
The final panel stands as the physical result of this collaboration: a vibrant and deeply moving portrait of the emotions experienced by hundreds of participants during the exhibition, capturing the spirit of connection that defines Threads of Belonging.
Funky Town
2024
Funky Town is a vibrant painting that was part of the “Funky Town Show”, a group exhibition held in Grand Rapids in 2024. The piece captures the energy and rhythm of street art, blending graffiti-inspired textures and bold colors with abstract forms influenced by the lively spirit of Rio de Janeiro.
Africa 2024
Africa is inspired by the colorful neighborhood of
Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, where vibrant houses became symbols of freedom and identity after apartheid. The painting celebrates resilience, cultural pride, and the power of color to tell stories of belonging and renewal.
Marroco 2024
Morocco is inspired by Chefchaouen, the “Blue City” of northwest Morocco, where shades of blue cover every wall, symbolizing peace and spirituality. The painting captures the city’s serene beauty and its blend of cultures — a reflection of harmony, tradition, and the timeless connection between color and soul.
Rio 2024
Rio is inspired by Morro Santa Marta, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most colorful favelas, transformed through the Favela Painting Project by artists Haas&Hahn in collaboration with local residents. The bold, joyful colors represent hope, pride, and the power of art to unite and uplift communities, turning everyday life into a living masterpiece.
